The Adventures of Sir Bernard The Good Knight!
A musical tale presented by Steve Green
"A knight doesn't become a knight overnight. Over and over you practice what's right!" - Sir Bernard
Kids are the target audience. But don't even ask about the genre & that's a thing unto itself. Boasting over an hour of content including a clever story, snappy songs, comical characters, and eye-popping illustrations, The Adventures Of Sir Bernard The Good Knight! is a delightful epic musical adventure (complete with illustrated, full-color storybook) that parents and children can plunge into together. And while Sir Bernard is highly entertaining, it's also highly instructive. Not to mention innovative, lively, colorful, compelling and fun!
"When I had the idea two years ago to build a children's project around the 12 chivalric virtues," says Sparrow recording artist Steve Green, "I didn't know what it would look like, but I knew it had to be something geared to today's kids. It had to be very high quality, very entertaining, and at the same time it needed to communicate important things in a way that would make sense to a kid. It wasn't enough just to tell kids to be virtuous. We wanted kids and adults to come away with a better understanding not only of what virtues like bravery, kindness, and trustworthiness are, but of why they're important in our daily lives."
Under the direction of an all-star creative team of writers, producers, arrangers, illustrators and voice actors, the musical story of Sir Bernard and Little Dog took shape as a rollicking, bigger-than-life, Broadway-influenced, Disneyesque audio adventure. Set in a time of knights, castles and dragons, the fast-paced tale centers on Sir Bernard, a heroic knight and champion of the realm (who also just happens to be a hefty St. Bernard dog) and his scrappy sidekick Little Dog, a well-intentioned but misguided pup who dreams of one day being a virtuous knight as well.
"Sir Bernard is the strong, seasoned knight, the embodiment of chivalric virtues," Steve explains. "Little Dog is still very rough around the edges. Little Dog's notions of knighthood are misguided. He's clueless, but eager to learn. He makes blunders along the way and puts his paw in his mouth a few times, but his understanding grows with each successive mishap. Kids really seem to identify with the Little Dog character and make the journey with him. At the end of the story, when this fun little rambunctious pup takes the first step toward his dream, kids see the accomplishment as their own."
Steve Green's previous kids' projects have included the highly successful Hide 'Em In Your Heart series (over 800,000 units sold), as well as the best-selling Prayer Bear videos. Though these continue to sell well even twelve years after their initial releases, Steve sensed it was time to tailor a new project for the youngsters who continue to make up about 20% of his concert audiences.
"The hearts of children are still tender," Steve says. "Kids whose hearts are molded by truth at an early age are saved from a lot of difficulty later on. I've noticed a trend in kid's programming toward cynicism and unbelief, even a pointed agnosticism woven into the fabric of TV and movies. Implicitly woven through the Sir Bernard project is a Christian worldview. It's not didactic. It doesn't come across as 'Okay, now we're gonna teach you something.' The story has integrity as a story. The songs are tremendous. It catches you by surprise. It comes alongside of you, makes you laugh, and when you get done with the song you find yourself thinking about the truth of it. It peels back the deeper meaning of these virtues in a way that even adults are responding to."
Included in the Sir Bernard packaging are a CD featuring an hour-long musical adventure (32 tracks to be exact) with an eight-minute bedtime story version narrated by Steve that corresponds with the richly illustrated 24 page read-along storybook and an enhanced link to the web site www.sirbernard.com featuring printable coloring pages. There's even a mini-coloring poster of Little Dog on the backside of the cover art in the packaging.
"Kids have changed over the years," Steve observes. "It takes a little bit more to get their attention. The pace of this is quicker than on my previous kid's projects, the energy is higher. But it's still the same heart and caring because everyone involved in Sir Bernard worked sacrificially to produce something of exceptional quality, something really valuable and necessary. The way these virtues are explained and taught will exceed people's expectations."
